My top 5 free development tools

May 7, 2007 ·

    Visual Studio Express Editions
The free editions of Visual Studio are just fantastic. If you’re developing for Windows they are the best free IDE:s out there.
    TortoiseSVN
Lets you use Subversion from Explorer. It doesn’t get much easier than that. With OpenSVN you have no excuse to program without source control.
    Testdriven.NET
Run your unit tests from within Visual Studio. You don’t have to release buggy code because you are using free tools.
    NSIS
The easy way to create install programs for your projects.
    FreeMind
Keep track of your ideas and all the things you need to do.

This is my entry for the Top 5 – Group Writing Project

Wow, thanks Johan. I’m a bit familiar with .Net (don’t use express edition but have heard it’s great), but have never heard of the other 4. Great tips, I’ll be checking them out!

Good luck in the Problogger project! Can’t wait ’til Friday! :)

    I’m no fan of .NET.

Good luck with the writing project

    Hi
    Nice top 5
I don’t really know what to write here as I am a complete computer idiot. I’d just like you to know that when the world is run by computers and guys like you are kings, I will be looking for a job as a bell boy or something. Please remember me!

    Thanks
    Tom

I am not a developer, but your suggestions do look like the top of the line for people on a shoestring budget just getting into development.

Nice top 5! I can second the TortoiseSVN & FreeMind selections… but, I’m a PHP developer primarily. Subversion is great since it supports any content type. It recently saved my hide by letting me recover something I deleted six months ago!
